should bark be left on or taken off of “live Edge” furniture?

That is a very good question and there are a lot of opinions on it. When I first started dealing with Live Edge the rule of thumb of probably most in the woodworking world was to take the bark off. Why, often, the thought was that over time the bark would break off. And, I think that could well be the case. Also, if one were to bump the edge hard, or whatever, it could break off, or loosen in time and then break off.

However, I have discovered a lot of people like the bark and want it left on. I like leaving the bark on and have done so several times. I like the look, but i need to know that it is solid and that even in the stand of time, it will stay solid.

I often epoxy my live edge, and put up to three coats on it, (two sealed coats and a deep pour.) If it is solid going into that then more than likely it will be solid for a long time.

The answer to the original question actually can therefore go either way. Just make sure that the bark is solid on that slab or it more than likely could be a problem later.

Why should I buy Board Butter?

If you have wood serving trays, boards, butcher blocks or charcuterie boards that you constantly use and wash, then you should use Board Butter on it every 2, 3 washings. Our boards are finished with about 3 coats of mineral oil and then one or two coats of Paul’s Woodworx Board Butter. Why? Over time the board board butter and mineral oil will wear down and there will be little protection with the result of loss of natural beauty, wood dehydration, drying and cracking.

Replacing the old with new Board Butter will retain the beauty and hydration in the wood, and protects the wood from drying and cracking.

We use Food Safe Mineral Oil for the initial finishes on our boards. Our Paul’s Woodworx Board Butter is 100% Food Grade MIneral Oil and Beeswax. Again, we recommend re-applying it after 2 or 3 washes.

Paul’s Woodwork Board Butter is available in 4oz tins in our store..

“Custom” means “unique”

In our Blog we will be providing information and tips that I believe you will find interesting and informative. Our blogs probably won’t be long and involved but there is information we want you to know.

All of our wood creations are custom, most all done by myself in my humble workshop garage. Being custom, it MEANS THAT ALL CUSTOM WORK IS UNIQUE TO THAT PROJECT. No two creations are absolutely alike. Like you and I, who are unique creations of God, each custom project we finish has it’s unique qualities.

Nothing explains that more than looking at Black Walnut serving boards that came from the same tree slab, but one has multiple grains, another may have the beginnings or remnants of a knot. But each are unique and beautiful.

So, when you look at all of our offerings, you will see many variations, some possible flaws of the wood and all of that makes each one beautiful.

And Paul’s woodworx was born

It all began with an idea. That’s how most problems are solved. Find a problem and fix it. That’s how ultimately Paul’s Woodworx began. I did not start out to start another business. I’ve own several throughout the years. My problem was that I wanted a new desk for my office and I really wanted it to be LIVE EDGE. So…. one day I decided to make my own.

Boy, was that interesting when i told my wife, Pat, that i was going to custom build a live edge desk. I had never done made a desk before, let alone a live edge desk.

I not only wanted a desk for my office, I wanted it to have a finish like a bar top, made of epoxy. I did not know at the time that process and all that it entails. Long story short, I custom built that desk. (it now is in my office.). And people loved it. They liked what we did.

And so, i built more live edge furniture and people wanted to buy them.

We have now not only make gorgeous custom furniture, we make smaller projects for the home and office. Many of them are in. our store. Some are made with wood and epoxy, such as our large wall crosses. Some are made for food, such as our serving/cutting boards and trays.

What started out as a project and a hobby, soon became a small business, called Paul’s Woodworx. I’m glad you are here to share in our story.

So, what is your idea? What would you like custom built that we could help you with?
